Green Ports and Shipping
The Ports and Shipping Innovation Team provides innovative and inclusive solutions for sustainable port and shipping development in the WIO region. It promotes ecosystem-friendly port infrastructure, green and efficient shipping practices, and the creation of decent jobs and economic opportunities—positioning ports as key drivers of regional connectivity, trade, and blue economic growth.

The innovation team seeks to:
- Develop and support innovative, ecosystem-conscious solutions for the planning, construction, and operation of ports in alignment with the Greening Ports Tool Kit for the WIO region, while positioning ports as hubs for economic growth, community development, and environmental protection.
- Encourage the adoption of low-emission technologies, energy-efficient operations, and the use of alternative fuels to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, while aligning with international maritime environmental frameworks such as the IMO GHG Strategy and MARPOL
- Leverage innovation in ports and shipping to create decent jobs, strengthen local and regional value chains, and support youth employment and skills development in maritime-related industries across the region.
- Facilitate knowledge exchange, capacity building, and the development of coherent regulatory frameworks that support sustainable maritime transport and ensure alignment with regional and global sustainability goals.
